Four options for legally educating your child at home are:
- Filing an annual private school (R4) affidavit (private)
- Joining an independent study program (can be private or government)
- Hiring a state-certified tutor, or being a state-certified teacher (private or government)
- Using a state-funded home study program (government).
Cal. Ed. Codes: §48222, 48224 & 51745. Contact HSLDA for family-specific advice.
To File your own R4 Affidavit
- Private School Affidavits were available on the Internet for the 2006-2007 school year. Go to www.hslda.org, select "California", then "go". Select "Private School Affidavit Filing Instructions", read and follow the directions. Affidavits must generally be completed and filed between October 1st and 15th each year.
- New private schools that start up later in the school year should contact HSLDA for family-specific advice.
Remember, an affidavit is notification of operating a private school, not a request for permission. You don't have to be an HSLDA member to check their website for affidavit info, but you should be a member for the protection it affords you as a home schooling family.
- This is not legal advice.
- Contact Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) for legal advice.

Types of groups available
Support Groups are groups of families who receive
support through various programs and have differing requirements
and costs. Additional support groups to CFE and practically
homeschooling are listed at
www.cheaofca.org. Click on
Directory, Orange County, and the type of group you are
looking for.
Independent Study Programs are groups of families who list
their children together on one R4 affidavit. ISPs offer various
programs and have differing requirements and costs. ISPs are
listed on CHEA's web site www.cheaofca.org. Click on Directory, Orange County, and the type of group you are looking for.
Tutoring Programs
Tutoring programs use a pre-determined curriculum with on-site
classes two or three days per week. They are not, strictly speaking,
home schooling, since the parents delegate some degree of authority
to the tutoring program. However, for many families, these are a
helpful alternative. Listings of providers of tutoring services are
available by searching the CHEA
web site's Directory page.
